Dating someone in from a different religion is possible in western culture. Unfortunately, this type of religion is often associated with dangerous groups as a small part of them wield terror in other countries. It would be a little bit awkward to meet the parents and immediate family but they are just ensuring that the person their daughter or son is dating is according to their preferences.
If you are not a Muslim, you have to expect some hesitation. If you are thinking ahead, the union of a Muslim and a non-Muslim should be your concern. The best way to be integrated to the family is to be part of their religion.

Although there differences that you have to realize and might find difficult to go with; you should see this with an open mind. Your partner will really appreciate this when you are able to know more about their culture. It might even be possible that you know more about their religion compared to your partner.
